Writing

From quick text markup to KaTeX mathematics, live diagrams, clipboard image handling and keyboard shortcuts.

The editor

Tessamark provides a text editing surface with background syntax parsing. Code blocks retain fixed-width alignment, and text remains plain Markdown files on disk.

When you open an existing file, no tags or syntax get converted to a proprietary structure.

The format menu

On macOS, Linux and Android the Format menu exposes fourteen formatting commands. The iPad Format menu has eleven of them and the iPhone has a formatting bar instead; see the table below. Selecting text and triggering a command wraps the selection in the appropriate syntax delimiters:

  • Bold: wraps selection in **
  • Italic: wraps selection in *
  • Underline: wraps selection in <u>...</u>
  • Strikethrough: wraps selection in ~~
  • Heading 1: prepends line with #
  • Heading 2: prepends line with ##
  • Heading 3: prepends line with ###
  • Unordered List: prepends line with -
  • Ordered List: prepends line with 1.
  • Blockquote: prepends line with >
  • Inline Code: wraps selection in `
  • Mermaid Diagram: inserts a fenced ```mermaid diagram block
  • Math Block: inserts a block math enclosure $$...$$
  • Inline Math: wraps selection in single dollar signs $...$
Platform Where to find it

iPad Format button in the toolbar (trailing edge, regular width). Its eleven items are Bold, Italic, Underline, Strikethrough, Heading 1, Heading 2, Heading 3, Bullet List, Numbered List, Blockquote and Code; it has no Mermaid Diagram, Math Block or Inline Math item.
iPhone No Format menu. A row of five icon buttons sits above the keyboard: bold, italic, heading, bullet list and inline code.

Maths (inline and block, KaTeX)

Tessamark renders mathematical notation locally using KaTeX. No external network request is made to download fonts or compile expressions.

Write inline formulas with single dollar delimiters: $E = mc^2$. For display formulas centered on their own line, use double dollar delimiters:

$$ \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} $$

The preview pane compiles formulas as you type.

Mermaid diagrams

You can generate flowcharts, sequence diagrams, and architecture graphs directly in Markdown using Mermaid blocks.

Add a code fence tagged with mermaid:

```mermaid graph TD A[Start] --> B{Decision} B -->|Yes| C[Result] B -->|No| D[Alternative] ```
The preview renders this code into SVG diagrams.
Pasting images and SVG files
When you copy an image to your clipboard and paste it into Tessamark, the app saves the image file into an assets/ folder beside the note and inserts a Markdown link ![](assets/image.png).
On Android, because clipboards rarely contain binary pictures, the More menu provides an explicit Insert Image… option that opens the device photo picker and saves the chosen file through the same storage path.
You can also drag SVG graphics directly into your workspace. Tessamark displays SVG images inline in the preview, sanitising embedded scripts before rendering.
Find and replace
Search through the open note and replace matching phrases across your file.
  1. Trigger Find and Replace from your menu or keyboard shortcut.
  2. Enter the target search term.
  3. Enter replacement text and confirm replacements individually or all at once.
